About Strata Florida Abbey (Cadw)

Saif abaty Ystrad Fflur neu Strata Florida – y Lladin am ‘Fro’r Blodau’ – ar ddolydd ffrwythlon wrth ymyl glannau afon Teifi ers 1201.

Fe’i sefydlwyd gan fynachod Sistersaidd mentyll gwynion yn rhan o fudiad a aeth fel ymchwydd ledled gorllewin Ewrop i gyd yn yr Oesoedd Canol cynnar. Cyn hir, yma oedd yr eglwys enwocaf yng Nghymru ar ôl Tyddewi – man pererindod ac echelbin diwylliant Cymru.

Clywir atsain mawredd yn ddigamsyniol ymhlith yr adfeilion. Yn y porth gorllewinol cerfiedig i’r abaty, cynigir golygfa aruthrol i lawr canol yr eglwys i’r man lle safai’r brif allor ar un adeg.
You can still see some of the incredible decorated tiles that would have covered the floors of the church. Griffins, birds and fleurs-de-lis surround the enigmatic ‘Man with the Mirror’. This 14th-century figure dressed in a doublet and close-fitting hood is reckoned to be a symbol of vanity.

Strata Florida, or Ystrad Fflur as local people know it, is the final resting place for generations of medieval Welsh princes. The great poet Dafydd ap Gwilym is said to be buried under a yew in the churchyard. No wonder it’s been called ‘the Westminster Abbey of Wales’.
