About Beaumaris Castle (Cadw)

Mae Biwmares ar Ynys Môn yn enwog am mai yma mae’r castell gorau erioed na’i hadeiladwyd. Hwn oedd yr olaf o’r cadarnleoedd brenhinol a grëwyd gan Edward I yng Nghymru - ac efallai ei gampwaith.
Yma manteisiodd Edward a’i bensaer James o San Siôr yn llawn ar gynfas gwag, sef y ‘beau mareys’ neu ‘gors hardd’ wrth ymyl Afon Menai. Erbyn hyn, roeddent eisoes wedi adeiladu cestyll mawrion Conwy, Caernarfon a Harlech. Hwn fyddai’n coroni’r cyfan iddynt.
Y canlyniad oedd caer anferth a oedd bron yn berffaith gymesur. Roedd nid llai na phedwar cylch cydganol o amddiffynfeydd aruthrol yn cynnwys ffos llawn dŵr gyda’i doc ei hun. Roedd y waliau allanol yn unig yn frith o 300 o ddolenni saethau.

But lack of money and trouble brewing in Scotland meant building work had petered out by the 1320s. The south gatehouse and the six great towers in the inner ward never reached their intended height. The Llanfaes gate was barely started before being abandoned.

So the distinctive squat shape of Beaumaris tells of a dream that never quite came true. Still it takes its rightful place on the global stage as part of the Castles and Town Walls of Edward I World Heritage Site.
Because this castle is special – both for the scale of its ambition and beauty of its proportions. Gloriously incomplete Beaumaris is perhaps the supreme achievement of the greatest military architect of the age.
