Plas Tan Yr Allt is a unique country house, the first Regency villa in North Wales built by William Alexander Madocks and set in beautiful Welsh countryside just north of Porthmadog. The multi-award-winning property has featured on Welsh television, in national newspapers and has numerous fascinating historic and literary links. The poet Percy Bysshe Shelley lived here from 1812 to 1813 and completed his most celebrated of works Queen Mab "All things are recreated". Other notable residents and visitors have included the famous Portmeirion founder and architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. One of the guest rooms is named after the architect's aunt Miss Mary Hilda Greaves.

The house is elevated on a hillside within 40 acres of ancient woodlands and has fabulous views across the Glaslyn Estuary, Ffestiniog Steam Railway and beyond towards Harlech Castle and the mountains. Located in the hub of Snowdonia the property is the perfect place to explore all that the National Park has to offer.

The current owners are offering three luxuriously appointed bedrooms, complete with antiquities and period features, all named after some of its previous residents: The William Madocks Bedroom, Shelley's Theatre and Miss Hilda's. All rooms come complete with an array of creature comforts consistent with a property of this type. Lavishly appointed en-suite bathrooms with slate underfloor heating complete the picture.

Recommended award-winning restaurant Y Sgwar is located in the village just 2 minutes away by taxi. Husband and wife team David and Lorraine Lloyd-Roberts have created a very special Dinner A La Carte Menu. With the added benefit of dining at two fantastic and unique locations. We have significant literary connections to writers and poets:

1, Percy Bysshe Shelley 1812-1813 - Romantic poet lived here with his first wife, completed his first epic poem Queen Mab and survived an 'assassination attempt'. The event was the impetus behind the famous 'Inn scene' in his second wife Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. BBC Radio 4 produced a play 'Who Shot Shelley' https://youtu.be/M4GqbYTgAg8

2, A.C Benson who wrote the words to Elgars 'Land of Hope & Glory' summered here regularly and dedicated a poem to the house 'Tan yr Allt'.

3, E.F Benson (brother of A.C) also stayed at the house who wrote the wacky Mapp & Lucia novels as televised by the BBC.

4, Ghost writer M.R James also stayed at the house with A.C and E.F Benson.

5, William Robert Spencer - English poet and wit from the Spencer family - Oxford friend of William Alexander Madocks (former resident who founded Tremadog, Porthmadog and constructed Y Cob in Porthmadog) stayed here and wrote the poem 'From Sister Dolly in Cascadia To Sister Tanny in Snowdonia - *Dolly refers to Madocks' house Dolmelynllyn - Tanny refers to our house which he also owned.

6, This was the home of William Alexander Madocks (founder of Tremadog, Porthmadog and who constructed Y Cob) he had a love of amateur theatricals. His friend Richard Brinsley Sheridan produced his play The Rivals at the then Tremadoc Theatre.

7, Twm o'r Nant - Thomas Edwards - Welsh language dramatist and poet also known as the 'Cambrian Shakespeare' was a visitor to the house and associate of Madocks.

8, Sir Clough Williams Ellis (Portmeirion founder) was a regular visitor to the house - His mother lived here and aunt Mary Hilda Greaves was born here - His mother Ellen found a rusty old pistol (mention in Country Life at the time) whilst gardening - could this have been the very pistol that was used to shoot Shelley during the 'assassination attempt'... We have a mural of The Triumph of Neptune (awaiting restoration) in the Dining Room which Sir Clough designed.

9, Thomas Love Peacock - Writer of Headlong Hall was a regular visitor to the house - Close friend of Shelley - The squire Harry Headlong was based on William Madocks: https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/proginfo/2016/04/headlong-hall

10, Bertrand Russell - Local resident philosopher and public intellectual was a regular visitor to the house and came face to face with a 'cannibal' here!
