About Picton Castle & Gardens

Built in the 13th century by Sir John de Wogan, Picton is a medieval castle unlike any other in the country. Extensive renovations in the Georgian era turned this significant Pembrokeshire fortress into a lavish stately home. The elegant rooms feature exquisite interiors, fine works of art and an impressive antique collection.
The castle went by inheritance to the Dwnn family and then, in 1491, Joan Dwnn married Sir Thomas Philipps of Cilsant, Carmarthenshire. It remained the centre of the Philipps family’s operations in Pembrokeshire up until the end of the 20th century. The Honourable Hanning Philipps and his wife Lady Marion Philipps were the last members of the family to live in the castle and they gifted the castle, its collections, and gardens to The Picton Castle Trust in 1987 (Registered Charity No 519693). The charity created by this generous gift is charged with preserving this important part of Welsh heritage and with encouraging access for the benefit of the people.

The castle is surrounded by 40 acres of stunning gardens that are part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s partner garden scheme. There is something for everyone, including a recently restored 19th century walled garden, glasshouse with exotics, fernery, children’s adventure playground, maze, rare plant collection and mature woodland.
