About Grassholm Island Trips

Come to Grassholm Island Gannetry aboard our 50 seater passenger boat 'The Dale Princess' Around eleven miles offshore Grassholm Island is a reserve of the Royal Society for Protection of Birds - no landing is allowed on the island due to the large number of Gannets nesting here on the only Gannet colony in Wales. Viewed from afar the island appears to be snow covered or having a white 'halo' - this, in fact, is the Gannet colony. Approximately 30,000 pairs of Gannets crowd onto the tiny, waterless island to nest and lay their single egg. The noise and sheer spectacle of vast numbers of these magnificent seabirds as the boat gets close to the island is something that, once experienced, will never be forgotten. Gannets are brilliant white in colour and dive for fish into the waters around Grassholm from heights of up to thirty metres. When one realises that the full-grown Gannet is about the size of the average Christmas goose the spectacle becomes even more amazing! Other breeding birds you may see on your trip include small numbers of Kittiwake, Razorbill, Shag and Herring & Great Black-backed Gulls - and of course there is always the chance of a seal, dolphin or porpoise popping up to say hello. A delight to visit, we recommend you make this part of your Pembrokeshire experience.
